I've always thought that tomatoes were a vegetable, but I've been hearing that they are a fruit. They say, it has seeds, so it's a fruit. And it's grown from a vine from the ground, so it's a veggie. What is it?

Fruit? Veggie?
It is a fruit though it probably taste like a veggie
Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit.
Reply:Fruit.
Reply:I always thought it was a veggie - until yesterday when I learned that it really is a fruit.
Reply:Fruit.But I think it should be a vegetable:/
Reply:Botanically, it's a fruit..just like peppers, cucumbers, squash etc but they are used as a vegetable in cooking.
Reply:I don't know if this one will ever be resolved. It even goes back to when I was a kid but I vote veggie.
Reply:It's a fruit.
Reply:fruit
Reply:It is a fruit! Seeds qualify it as a fruit. Growing on a vine doesn't qualify it as a vegetable. Grapes grow on vines; they're fruit.
Reply:It really is a fruit but it eats like a vegetable.
Reply:Tomatoes are a fruit becuz they have seeds. Some people say they're grown from a vine, that's just slang terminology, becuz their stalks can get lancky. Grapes are said to grow off a vine but apples, peaches, pears, etc. grow off trees. The correct classification for a tomato is fruit, becuz of the seeds.
Reply:Fruit is the correct classification.
