Do fruit and vegetables go bad quicker these days than they did, say, a few years ago ?

So much is happening with our food these days that it's difficult to say exactly what changes are happening with it. Do fresh fruit and vegetables last longer these days than a few years ago. (Processed meals definitely can last a long time. Some bread is made to last a week, etc). But fresh fruit and vegetables - what about that ? Maybe an older person can know the answer.

I am one of those older persons and I can tell you that the fruit and veg we are getting from the supermarkets these days are cr..p !

I only buy organic because anything else goes off ALL TOGETHER ! You buy a punnet of peaches for example , it says

" Ripen at home " they are rock hard when you get them out of the punnet . The next day they are ROTTEN ALL TOGETHER

It's like black magic !

I got so cross I am ordering my fruit and veg from a local farm delivery service .It is not expensive and the stuff actually lasts .Tastes better too !

Try it ,good luck !!
Reply:I've not noticed. I will now!
Reply:Fresh Fruit and Veg is usually off as soon as it hits the shops these days!
Reply:No, they don't. I am a fruit and vegetable Doctor and i should know!
Reply:last longer
Reply:i would say they last longer and i am 59 but i think it is due to the modernized storage ability and the means of transportation they are able to get it to the stores in better shape than years ago and they are growing a lot of hybrid veggies..that is a good question it makes you have to think a little....
Reply:with central heating yes for sure xx wash the wax off ya apples, yuk an keep all veg in cool store xx
Reply:yes
Reply:yes they do, its not local or seasonal anymore, and the supermarkets store it for months so by the time you buy it it isnt fresh anyway, central heating doesnt help.

Im not older (27 in fact) just aware
Reply:No they last just about as long as they always did what may vary is the way you ae storing them
Reply:i THINK THEY DO, IT'S COS WE DON'T HAVE COLD HOUSES WITH PANTRIES ANY MORE
Reply:i put it down to the fact now im older i buy more {earn more} so stuff goes off, where as when i was like 18 id buy sod all and even if it was turning ,. id be so skint id chop off the dodgy bits and eat it anyway
Reply:no, when i wa slittle my old dear would buy fresh fruit and vegtables and she would use them like 4 day later and they would still be fresh but now you cant you have 2 buy fresh food and eat on dy as due to the weather and the chemicals they put on it but thats why we buy organic foods now as they dont have that chemical on them and they tend too last a few days later
Reply:Yes i think thats right, they are sprayed with chemicals and insecticides, and they soon go off. I keep mine in the fridge so they are cool, including potatoes they stay fresher there.
Reply:Thwe GM modified ones last longer.

The others degrade at the same rate they always did.
Reply:yep...too much pesticides i guess and of course the quality of air, water and and soil that we have now is not as good as it was before...
