What fruit or veg can I grow in a window box?

I have a 60x20cm trough outside my window, and I was thinking it might be fun to grow some fruit or veg rather than flowers this year. Can anyone suggest some fruit or veg that I can plant in this little space and how much/many? Thanks!

tumbling tomato plants are amazing. really compact bushy plant with loads of fruit, yum yum! You can get the seeds from most garden centers or on-line. Start them off on a sunny windowsill and re-pot them when they have 4 leaves but dnt put them outside until they're strong.

Basil is good too. You can get salad that grows more when you pick leaves of it. Growing your own salad is soooooo rewarding!

good luck
Reply:Try a tumbling tomato or 2, or chillis or get 2 or 3 strawberry plants. They are all fairly compact plants that will grow well in a med sized pot.

Or a mix.

Remember to cover the fruit with a piece of garden netting too to stop the birds picking at it.

And feed with a general purpose plant food - will make a huge difference.

Reply:lettuce and other greens work well. i agree that strawberries would do well, that's how i grow mine. if you can find alpine strawberry plants, those are awesome, a lot like wild strawberries except bigger and more productive. herbs also, get some small growing herbs (rosemary and sage won't work, they get huge) like basil, thyme, and chives. small growing tomatoes. hope this helps.
Reply:Fruit and veg have much bigger roots than flowers and will not grow well at all in a window box. they will struggle to grow. There are tomato plants that are ideal for large flower pots. I have grown these and they are nice and sweet. Ideal for salads.
Reply:I'm growing baby potato, round leaf lettuce, rocket (to fill the gaps), basil and baby carrots in mine.

It's great fun!
Reply:cress
Reply:Tomatoes, lettuce and various herbs. Just pick what you like.
Reply:There isn't much that you can grow in a window box, except possibly grape tomatoes and small lettuce leaves, but herbs are another thing. You can do parsley, basil, rosemary, thyme, mustard greens and many more. This would make a lovely window box and you can use all these herbs and vegetables during the summer for salads and to add to soups and other foods. You can start all the herbs from seed, but if not your local nursury has them. The grape tomatoes are becoming very popular and I grew them last summer and they were so sweet. My suggestion is to put one marigold flower in with the plants to keep away all the bugs. It works. Also, once a week when you water, use a little garlic juice or tobacco juice from a broken up cigarette, (let the tobacco and garlic sit in a quart of water overnight) then add only juice and a tsp of liquid detergent in your watering can and water your plants and you will never be bothered with bugs of any kind.
Reply:herbs, radishes, tomatoes, hot peppers, bell peppers, bush beans, all do well in planters.
Reply:its not fruit and veg - but it would make a lovely herb garden
Reply:Grow strawberries, easy and lots of fun.
