Is a Tomato a fruit or vegetable???

is a tomato a FRUIT, or a VEGGIE

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

it has seeds like a fruit, but grows in the ground and/or above it, not on a tree!

RAWR!!!

WHY is it a fruit or veggie?!

Is a Tomato a fruit or vegetable???
a tomato is fruit because of the seeds and the fact its made of mostly water. some cook books now list three categories as fruit, fruit-vegetable and vegetable. another fruit vegetable would be the cucumber. also all fruit doesn't grow on trees like grapes, strawberries, and watermelon just to name a few
Reply:Scientifically it's a fruit. Socially it's a vegetable. I has seeds which makes it a fruit but you find it at the vegetable section in the supermarket...go figure. Report It
Reply:its a fruit i learned that in 7th grade i always thought it was i veggie Report It
Reply:Let's just end the argument, let's just say it is BOTH!
Reply:Fruit it has seeds
Reply:fruit. SO, if it's based on the seed, then woudn't some veggies really be fruit also. (lke Cucumbers).

Tomato is a Fruit. 100 % sure.
Reply:tomatos are fruit scientifically !!!!!! (they have seeds)

tomatos are vegetables socially and economically (there are different laws to transport vegetables)
Reply:Scientifically, the tomato is a fruit since it's the swollen ovary of a flowering plant. There are a lot of different types of fruits that may not seem like fruits, but are by definition.. fruits.

Interestingly, the U.S. Supreme Court designated tomatoes as vegetables because they are eaten at dinner, as opposed to dessert.
Reply:The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking.
Reply:fruit.
