Can a novice grow a fruit tree in zone 6b (Pa)? My kids want a cherry tree? Will it bear fruit?

My kids want to plant a fruit-bearing tree. I think it won't bear fruit in this coldish climate. Can you grow a cherry or other fruit tree in zone 6? Thanks!!

I know that there are a lot of cherries grown in northern lower Michigan ... that means the top half of the mitten part :D

Check with your county extension agent or urban forester. If you are having trouble finding them in the phone book, the local office of the US Department of Agriculture will know the number.
Reply:haven't you heard of the famous Japanese cherry trees and their blossoms? yes you can grow them there, and a novice just needs the right info,, you have a computer so do a search for "growing cherry trees" and see what pops up,, many fruit trees need a pollinator,, you may have to get two!!
