Fruit and Veg. for Hamsters?
unfotunately, some people who give their answers just tend to copy certain texts from wherever they can without any definate research at all. I am a very successful hammy breeder, and reccomend that you can give most fruit and veg, but in moderation. Fruit /veg should only be given maybe once a week, unless you find that your hammy is not drinking very much, then and only then, you can increase the amount a little, maybe twice a week untill they start to take their fluids on a regular basis. Too much fruit/veg given to your hammy can be extremely dangerous, it can give your hammy a very nasty desease called wet tail. Wet tail, is basically , the runs for hamsters and is potentionally life threatening. So, please take my advise, keep your eye on his drinkng habbits, and follow as I have advised and you will have a very happy, healthy pet for some time. Enjoy them and good luck.xxx

Reply:I used to give my hamster I whole carrot and take it away after about a day so it didn't rot and she just ate what she wanted. It was so funny she'd pick it up in her teeth like a dog does a bone and walk into the nest and it wouldn't fit and she'd just keep trying and trying.

You can also give them sultanas but only a few because they're quite rich. You can also give them grapes, tomatos, cabbage, pear, apple, swede and wild plants!! Like dandelion and clover. Just make sure they're well washed with no weed killer on!

JUST DONT GIVE THEM:

Coltsfoot

Rhubarb leaves

potatoe topes

and tomato leaves

Happy Hamstering. :D

Reply:The dry hamster food from any pet store has all the nutrients your hamster needs. Give fruit and veg as a treat, but limit it to a treat as too much can cause diarrhoea. Avoid giving too much lettuce as this can lead to liver problems.

Look on this page for a variety of fruits and veg you can treat your hamster with.

Reply:There is a wide variety of fruits and vegetables you can feed your hamster. However, you'll need to start slow. (Feeding your hamster too many fruits and vegetables, too soon, can give him diarrhea.) Begin by giving your hamster a small piece of fruit or vegetable 2 or 3 times per week. After about 4 weeks or so, gradually increase the amount, so that you are feeding him a small piece of fruit or vegetable 6-7 times per week. Reply:Try a piece of sweetcorn or a pea. Two days after that try a grape or carrot piece. Then after that just give them a little bit of veg every other day or so. NEVER give them citrus fruit or anything acidy or spicey.

My hamsters loves rice. I give them one piece a week, along with one or two grapes, a cashew, a carrot bit and a cooked mushroom. Sometimes brocilli and red pepper if they are good. Courgette is a fav too. Both my hamsters are happy and fit and are living way past there life expectancy.

Look at the RSPCA website if unsure, or ask a vet. They sometimes have leaflets
Reply:i would check the RSPCA's website for this info as you might not be able to trust peoples answers on here! and you dont want to feed the hamster something which might make it ill or harm it in anyway do you?!
Reply:Any fruit or veggie should be fed in tiny bits, and with a good bit of caution. Never over do the treats!

Keep them on their basic diet at all times
Reply:Apple pear tomato cabbage carrot swede broccoli parsnip leeks lettuce cucumber oranges kiwi fruit but only very small amounts of these my hamster only gets these on a sun when we have sun dinner, and she only gets one of these.Do not give them coltsfoot rhubarb leaves potato tops ans tomato leaves, bracken ragwort buttercup conkers these are poisonous to them.sliced hard boiled egg, pieces of cheese, flakes of cooked fish and small shreds of cooked meat should be occasionally introduced. But personally i wouldnt give me hamster meat or fish.they can eat seeds and nuts all the time. They can have millet and dog biscuits are good for their teeth, sweetcorn and celery they can have.Hope i helped any others you will get from a hamster book or the internet.
Reply:My hamster loves fruit and veg. I feed her broccoli, lettuce, apple, banana, cucumber. She loves it. Lettuce is a good one I would say, its mainly water.

This page contains a comprehensive list of what hammies can and cannot eat. However, also steer clear from anything thats strong flavoured e.g chilli, garlic etc and only put out a small amount at a time. Clear away anything thats not eaten after 10-15 minutes else it will start to go rotten in the cage.

My 2 roborovskis love apples and dries banana flakes1 Hope this helps!!
Reply:You can feed a full-grown hamster with about half a handful of fruit and veg a day. Baby hamsters should get a smaller amount about 3 times a week. More than this may give them stomach upset =[[
