Cut up fruit equals how many cups?

I'm doing a recipe for a snack and it calls for 12 cups of cut up fresh fruit.

The thing is I have NO IDEA how much fruit to buy to meet this! Fresh fruit doesn't come in "cups"! If i buy 3 of those 7inch x 4 inch x 4 inch boxes of strawberries, 2 bunches of grapes, 1 cantaloupe, half a pineapple, 2 pears and 2 apples would that be enough for 12 cups after I cut them up into bite sized pieces?

Thanks so much guys... ANY help what so ever would be appreciated.

Cutting up fruits (or vegetables) for later measurement is never an exact science. Two things to remember: (1) always cut up MORE of the fruit than you think you'll need. You can always find a use for the leftovers (on top of your breakfast cereal, maybe?) and (2) it doesn't have to be exact, anyway. You're making a fruit salad, not launching a space shuttle.

A medium sized apple or pear (chopped) equals about 1 cup. A medium sized melon (about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds) will yield about 3 cups of usable fruit. A pint box of fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, whatever) will yield about 2 cups of cut up fruit.

As for pineapple: I never actually cut one up to measure it, but I know that a 15-ounce can of chopped pineapple (chunks) is about 2 cups (not counting the liquid that it's in). For that reason, I'd suggest going with fresh fruits, all EXCEPT for the pineapple. It's essentially measured for you already.
Reply:yes, i think so...just buy some extra...wont hurt will it?
Reply:yeah, i think so.
Reply:Yeah I think that'll probably be enough. Maybe get another apple and pear since just to be safe. Also I'd suggest gettin some oranges. They are easy to divide up and they'd probably take up some more room. Don't forget to sprinkle a little salt on the apples to keep them from turning brown!
