Fruit Crumble with frozen fruit!?

Im cooking a crumble tonight and am using some frozen fruit like berries etc. Do I have to thaw them before I can use them in the crumble? Also has anyone had a crumble with mixed berries? Is it nice? Or better to do with apples and vanilla?

Fruit Crumble with frozen fruit!?
Mixed Berry and Apple Crumble

For filling

1 banana

1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice

1 (21 ounce) bag frozen mixed berries

3 apples, peeled and diced

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

For topping

3/4 cup ground almonds

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

1 cup whole oats (not quick oats)

2 teaspoons cinnamon

salt (less if using salted butter)

1/2 cup melted butter

1/4-1/2 cup honey

1. Preheat oven to 375.

2. Separated pineapple juice from chunks and in a food processor, puree the pineapple chunks and banana.

3. In a small sauce pan, reduce the pineapple juice to a syrupy consistency.

4. Combine the pureed fruit, pineapple syrup, frozen berries, apple, and applesauce in a large sauce pan and bring to a low boil.

5. Allow to cook until the apple are soft and the juices of the fruit have thickened.

6. In a large bowl, combine the ground almond, chopped nuts, oats, cinnamon, and salt, if using.

7. In a small sauce pan combine honey and butter and heat till well melted.

8. Pour butter and honey mixture into the dry ingredients a stir to combine.

9. Pour fruit mixture into a greased 9 x 13 casserole pan and top with crumble.

10. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the fruit mixture is bubbling at the edges and the topping is golden brown.
Reply:I would think that you need to thaw it. Othewise your crumble is going to cooked well before you fruit has defrosted.

If you have to leave it frozen i'd put the fruit in the oven for a while on it's own first then when it's not ice any more put the crumble on top and put back in.
Reply:i have made it with mixed berries and it was good!

its better if you defrosted the fruit 1st!
Reply:I have used mixed berries for crumbles and they turn out very nice--the only difference is that I toss the slightly thawed berries with 1 Tablespoon each of flour, sugar, and orange juice and let them sit for about 5 min before continuing with the recipe--it came out too soggy otherwise.

Apple and vanilla with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg is also tasty!
Reply:you may want to thaw the fruit as on many recipes for fruit crumble the fruit isn't frozen, try your crumble with vanilla custard or just custard its really nice, apples and vanilla work good to but so do mixed berries , i find that mixed berries is nicer
