Fruit allegies or a one time thing????

i had a couple slices a kiwi and i felt my throat all weird and my tongue as well immeadielty and i used to eat it but i hadn't in a while. Then some other day i had a piece of mango and i got the same as the kiwi which was months before and my throat felt irritaed and tongue i guess numbish or so. Is this a food allergy or something in the fruit i am allergic to??? As far as i know i am allergic to cats and some dogs and some rabbits...mold...dust and maybe pollen. Then teh otehr day i had a smothie that had mangos and other fruit like peaches and i didn't get those funny feeling sin my thorat or tongue. Does it sound like i am allergic to these foods???? I used to eat magos like nothing before this incident now i am scared to...and i don't even want to know about kiwis!!!

Also the symptoms don't last to to long but they r annoying and uncomfortable.

Fruit allegies or a one time thing????
You most likely have Oral Allergy Syndrome. It's related to pollen allergies and you're probably experiencing a higher sensitivity to it now that we are getting into pollen season.

See an allergist, get tested for pollen allergies and then you'll know what foods to avoid. The good news is that cooking the offending fruits and veggies well will most likely kill off the enzyme you're having a reaction to.

Classic characteristics of OAS are itchy mouth and throat, swollen mouth and hives visible around the lips.

Often the food allgery related to the pollen is more severe and pronunced than the pollen allergy itself.

Do not ignore your reactions. If left untreated the reaction can get worse each time you are exposed and soon you'll find yourself allergic to a lot more raw fruits, veggies, nuts, beans and soy. Keep a few Benadryl handy just in case. That itch can suddenly turn into a swelling of the throat completely shut. Your doc may also prescribe asthma meds. Watch for mucus in the chest and a wheeze.

Children often have similar reactions which are not OAS related, but if you're over 14 and having this type of reaction it usually means there's something else going on.

Take care!

Reply:My son has the same problems with fruit. He can eat a strawberry milk shake(made w/milk and strawberry syrup) but cant eat real strawberries. He can have different fruit pancakes-premade (blueberry or strawberry) but can't eat real fruit made with pancakes. Just something in real fruit attacks his face and throat. He gets a rash on his chin and mouth itches. But the doctor told me it is just a food allergy to certain ways the fruit is used in meals and snacks..but he is not allergic to it. Make sense??
Reply:I have the same thing except slightly more serious. I have that problem with any fruit that has an edible skin... cherries, apples, pears, plums... etc. My throat gets itchy and starts to swell and then my tongue starts to itch and swell as well. I can eat applesauce and have pear smoothies, but I can't eat the fruit itself. It defiantely sounds like an allergy.
