Fruit fly issue?

ok so i have an aerogarden that i have had in my kitchen for at least 4 months. I grew some basil, purple basil, chives, parsley and dill.well they got pretty big so I took them out of my aerogarden and put them in pots with soil.everything was fine for the first 3 days and all of a sudden i started getting little fruit flies. They attacked me when i went to my kitchen there was a whole bunch of them.Anyway i thought it was sick and i thought it was my plants so i moved them to the window sill where they get sun and are covered by my blinds. This morning i walked into my kitchen and theres a whole new batch of fruit flies. They seen to be staying around the sink.I checked on my plants and theres no flies there.Well i remeber a night b4 i got my flies my neighbor had returned a knife i had let her borrow she returned it clean but i threw it in the sink for washing.I left it there overnight.I know she is not the cleanest person in the world so i was wondering if i could have gotten all these

Fruit fly issue?
They can come form anywhere and they are a pain. They can also nest in your sink drain. Which is yucky.

So, now how to get rid of them....

Pour boiling water down the drain to kill any nesting down there.

Then roll a peice of paper into a funnel, put either some beer or a peice of banana in a cup and cover with the funnel (small end into the cup) The fruit flies will go into the funnel to get to the beer or banana, but are not smart enough to get back out.

Another method:

Take a small Glass - like a juice glass... and pour 1 inch of Dark CIDER (make sure it is real cider vinegar - not just the colored stuff) in the glass. Take some plastic wrap and cover the top of the glass - securing with a rubber band. Take a sharp object like a bamboo skewer and POKE holes - about 6 in the plastic wrap Put the glass near your fly problem.. they are stupid - can crawl down into the plastic wrap holes - but not out! EMPTY the glass outdoors far away from your house - or if mean... shake well until all flies are too wet to fly away - and flush down the drain... Change cider daily... oh - we also found out red wine works well too!
Reply:don't know how you got em, but you can get rid of them by mixing about 1/4cup hydrogen peroxide to 1 cup water and using it to water your plants a couple of times. and go to your local greenhouse and get some sticky paper on sticks to put in the plants containers
Reply:Based on the details, I would be willing to bet that they aren't fruit flies but some kind of plant bug. Fruit fly eggs are in the fruit that we eat. They hatch when fruit begins to rot. I doubt if fruit flies developed off the neighbor's knife. You need to have some kind of growth medium (such as fruit) for them to develop. I would see about getting some kind plant spray for bugs like the ones that you have.
Reply:usually fruit flies only go after fruit but if the knife wasn't totally clean they could have gone after it. the best thing to do that has always worked for me is to catch up on the dishes and clean my sink and counters. but then the only plants i have is lucky bamboo. and basil is supposedly supposed to repel flies
