Does fruit make you gain weight?

I love fruit %26amp; have always thought it was good for you. However, so many people now a days are saying that it's bad, and are cutting it out of their diet because of the sugar. How much fruit is okay? Are bananas bad because they are starchy? Please help.

Does fruit make you gain weight?
It's really not magic at all

More calories than recommended make you gain weight.

Water has no calories, everything else does.

Calories in fruit and veggies are best.

Find out your optimum daily caloric intake for your height and age and consume that much.
Reply:It is definitely better than eating a lot of hot dogs or french fries!

Fruit is relatively low in calories and has tons of vitamins and antioxidans. Most of it is water, and that hydrates you. The worst thing that will happen to you is that all that fiber will make you poop a lot. You probably will not get sick. I would suggest no more than 4 pieces a day.
Reply:Fruits are actually the RIGHT kind of sugar and help metabolize protein. They don't contain enough calories for you to gain weight from them.
Reply:Fruit does have lost of sugar, (or fructose which is a type of sugar) so if you eat a piece of fruit it's not going to keep you satisfied for very long because your body burns the sugar very quickly for instant energy. But, this may cause you to eat again sooner. Bananas are a wonderful choice though because they have so much nutrition in them and will keep you satisfied longer then say a peach or cherries.

But eating bananas or will not make one gain weight... or any other fruit for that matter.

Having fruit in your diet is NOT bad. They have lots of vitamins and also fiber, which is good for your digestive system. If you're hungry, you can have a piece of fruit but try to incorporate something else in there with it if possible, like a yogurt or something that will "stretch" the amount of time you will stay satisfied.

Reply:Fruit is one of the most healthy and natural foods in existence. There are thousands of different types of fruit available to eat, all of which provide us with strong health benefits. Fruit contains a large number of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and plant phytochemicals that help benefit health. It has also been shown that eating the whole fruit or juice is best to gain the benefits rather than taking supplements to provide each nutrient separately.

It has been recommended that we should be eating at least 5 pieces of fruit every day in order to gain the full health benefits of eating fruit.

Fruit can also benefit many people wanting to lose weight. Energy consumption is thought to be mainly influenced by the palatability, fiber content, density of energy and the variety of foods. Eating fruit has the benefit of affecting some these factors. Fruit is also low in sodium so they help reduce the chance of gaining water weight.

Providing you are eating about one-third of the diet as fruits %26amp; vegetables, you should notice rapid weight loss because the ample fruit consumption helps fill the stomach faster encouraging less high calorie foods to be consumed. The total calorie consumption will automatically reduce even if we are eating plenty of fruit and vegetables. There is such a variety of fruits available that many can be freely eaten without consuming too many calories thereby controlling weight more effectively.

Reply:That is the confusion that diets like the Atkins diet has caused. As long as it hasn't been processed and its the natural fruit, then eat your hearts desire. Bananas are OK, and are highly recommended after a work out, but I wouldn't eat more than 1 a day because they are more starchy then most fruits.
Reply:If it's fresh and you are not diabetic, eat LOT'S of it.

It will not make you fat, unless you are dipping it in chocolate!
Reply:Any food can make you gain weight if you eat too much of it. There are about 3,500 calories in a pound of human fat. If you eat 3,500 calories more than you use up in exercise, then you will gain a pound. So, if you eat 500 calories a day more than you use up, you will gain a pound a week--52 pounds in a year. Those calories can come from potato chips, or broccolli, or ice cream or oranges. It doesn't matter. (But obviously, calorie-dense foods are more likely to put on weight, because you don't have to eat as much of them).

One theory of weight gain, however, is that foods high in sugars and starches are more likely to make you gain weight. In addition to their simple calories, these foods are thought to interfere with your metabolism. By "shocking" the body with a sudden influx of carbohydrates (sugars and starches), they are believed to upset the body's natural regulating system.

So, people who follow the Atkins, South Beach, or similar diets tend to avoid fruits high in sugars, like citrus fruit and bananas. One way to think of what is permitted on these diets is to think about tropical versus non-tropical fruits. Pineapples come from Hawaii (tropical), oranges and grapefruits from Florida and California (tropical), bananas from Central America (tropical). But grapes come from places like New York state, Oregon, or Chile (all not tropical). Apples--from places like Washington, New York, and Virginia, are also not considered tropical. The non-tropical fruits have less sugar and are less likely to trigger the "glycemic index" reaction. Good luck!!
Reply:Yes it does, but never eat fruits after meal, wait for an hour.
Reply:fruit is good for you, and the sugar in them is different from the white, or brown sugar that we use. Their sugars are natural. But like everything else you have to use reason with any thing that you eat or drink.
Reply:Fruits %26amp; veggies are good for you. The more you have in your diet the better. I certianly don't think it'll make you gain weight b/c it is natural sugars not sugar like you get in candy %26amp; sodas, which are bad for you. So if you eat a lot of fruits %26amp; veggies with a little lean protein and fa t-free dairy products that is a very healty diet and would actually aid in weight loss. The thing about banana's %26amp; potatoes being starchy yes they are but I think the real danger in those starchy fruits %26amp; veg is a problem for diabetics and they should eat those in moderation. But a banana instead of a candy bar %26amp; a baked potato instead a bag of chips are healthier, smarter, %26amp; more health concious. Study the food pyramid or research a low fat, low salt, diabetic diet, %26amp; researh nutrition and then you won't fall for those silly diet scams that seek to keep you from eating fruits %26amp; veggies instead of a lot of high fatty meats. Good luck %26amp; good health.
Reply:It all depends on one key word: moderation! A certain amount of fruit is very healthy, but overdoing it can be a problem, especially since some fruits have a very high fructose/sugar content. Sugar is not readily utilized by our bodies, so people that eat too much of anything sugary will have to be careful about their weight. Please, please, do not cut out all fruit from your diet - you need the vitamins and minerals you can get from them as well as fiber. Bananas in and of themselves are not bad, but eat them in moderation.
Reply:Only if you eat a lot of fruits every day and lead a physically inactive lifestyle.

Fruits contain sugars and starches, which are carbohydrates, which are your body's main source of energy. If these carbohydrates aren't used within a matter of a day or two, they are converted to fat and stored in your fat cells (your body has no way of storing carbs over the long term, but has a special kind of tissue, called adipose tissue, for storing fat).

I'm not a nutritionist, so I can't tell you the exact amount of fruit you should be eating every day. But I do know that it depends on your metabolism, the amount of exercise you typically get, and other factors.
Reply:fruit is good for u!- but now 2 much of it either- it is sugar!!!!!!!!!!....eat an apple a day!- eat a banana only like 3 times a week if u love em so much- i do knwo that banans hold the sugar or somethin- i try not 2 eat 2 many of em........... berries are good for you!!!!!!!!
Reply:If you eat a lot of it you could gain weight. If you eat like a fruit salad each day you wouldn't. Only if you eat it 24/7.
