My neurotic cat eats fruit- is this bad for him?

We have a cat who is almost a year old. He loves random foods! He'll steal wheat thins or saltines; once he even dragged a piece of broccoli off my plate. But most of all he loves fruit. He loves licking the fruit off mango seeds, eating strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, almost anything except citrus fruits (oranges) which he refuses to touch. I am so confused!?!? I had cats all growing up and they NEVER did this. Is it bad to let him eat a little fruit in moderation? He loves his kitty food, so he's not just hungry. He just loves people food! Should I worry? (I am aware he shouldn't eat grapes or raisins) Thanks!

Weird huh?

My cat also eats strange things, she will leave chicken on a plate but will eat the bread or pasta that is with it. She also loves mashed potato.

If your cat doesnt seem to be upset by this diet i would guess he is probably ok. No runny poo or anything? Has he been wormed?

My cat took a sniff of an orange yesterday and jumped 2 foot vertically. I think they are a bit sour! lol.
Reply:I have a cat that loves lettuce
Reply:It's fine as long as it's in moderation. My cat will do anything for lettuce, spinach or collard greens! If there's lettuce in the fridge, she'll stick her head in as soon as I open it, paw the drawer where it's stored, and meow insistently! *lol* She also likes the water from canned olives, but she won't eat the olives themselves. Cats can be funny about food.

Cats like salty foods, so that's probably why yours likes the saltines and wheat thins. I wouldn't worry-all of the foods you mentioned should be fine in moderation. :)

P.S. You didn't mention chocolate, but just in case: chocolate is toxic for cats, so definetely don't feed him chocolate either.
Reply:If he doesn't have the runs he is fine.

Just keep it in moderation.

But it is a little weird, I have never seen a cat want fruit or veggies before.
Reply:dont worry, it is fine for your cat to eat fruits and veggies in moderation.
Reply:You've already used the most important word ~ moderation. I had a cat just like this once. She'd eat just about anything that was people food. Her faves were saltines and Doritos. But, as long as their main diet consists of a good healthy cat food, my vet told me a bit of people food 'in moderation' is ok. And, indeed, no grapes or raisins. :) You should be able to get a list of no-no foods from your vet or maybe even online.

Best of luck to ya!!
Reply:I had a cat when I was a kid that was so docile

until she could smell cantaloupe %26amp; then she would mame a person if they got between her %26amp; her and targeted cantaloupe

she was very healthy %26amp; lived to be 18 years old
Reply:As long as he is not eating too much he should be fine. Cats can't digest fruit or vegetables like dogs can, so as long as it is a small enough quantity to pass through their digestive system they will be fine. I had this same question a few years ago when I found out my cat liked spinach.
Reply:I'm sorry to tell you that it's not too good for your cat to let him eat fruit or anything plant-based. There are many cats who have lived a healthy life with the occasional high-carb/high-fibre supplement, but then again there's a lot of people who survived the war. Just because you hear of people who have cats who have eaten such junk food (it is junk food to cats) doesn't mean it is good for them, and if you love your cat then why take the risk?

Many animals will eat things that aren't good for them (I had a lizard that would eat dog food - VERY unhealthy for him!) but cats are pure carnivores. Dogs will eat carbs and fibre - they need it in their diet, as they are omnivores - which is why you can't feed a cat and a dog from the same tin. Cats have highly tuned systems, like other carnivores, so that they get all the carbohydrate and fibre from the meat. If you give them extra (especially such high-fibre food like fruit) he won't be able to digest it and it could make him very ill. Of ourse there are a few who have survived despite this - but they are exceptions to the rule.

Don't risk it. Even if he does love it, stick to feeding him cat food.
Reply:It's okay in moderation. I wouldn't be setting a place at the table for kitty though. My cat eats green beans, chic peas, pizza, watermelon and a few others. The pizza really shocked me. Left it sitting on the counter to get a drink and I turn around and there she is pulling it off my plate!!!!
Reply:I must have a crazy cat too because one of mine loves tomatoes and has been swiping them from me for over two years. He is fine and healthy.
